Is it true there are webcams capable of shooting in 1280 x 720 resolution at 30 frames per second? Surely it’s impossible to stream at such a rate!

It depends If you are using 1 camera then a nice dual core would do well . Im using a quad core amd Phenom II x4 940 with 12 gigs ram and with 4 cameras and all the software im running im nearly maxed out

I have a short question regarding the microsoft camera: if I use the lifecam cinema webcam for capturing 640×480 @30 FPS with a third party tool (Adobe Flash Encoder): do I need a strong CPU ? I have the feeling that the high CPU requirements are comming from the high resolution processing + windows software …

Hey Andrew,
You need to review it against the new Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 (not the same as the Quickcam Pro 9000). Logitech quietly changed the name and updated the firmware in the camera.

Logitech Webcam Pro 9000:
- While the QuickCam Pro 9000 offers VGA-quality video at 30 frames per second (high-quality video) on Skype, we made adjustments to ensure the updated Webcam Pro 9000 can perform up to VGA-quality video at 30 FPS on any video application, including Logitech Vid.
- The Webcam Pro 9000 was modified to be capable of adjusting to widescreen format and record 720 pixels (1280×720) at up to 30 FPS.
- Finally, software is no longer required for RightLight. Instead, we\’ve built it into the device, so right out of the box, you\’ll get the best image quality possible, regardless of harsh or dim lighting conditions. Perhaps too much information, but we also adjusted the firmware to make sure that RightLight engages only when necessary.

I dont think any service out there allows 1280×720 webchatting at this time. Ustream , Stickam Skype all have a set resolution that they allow. I dont think any of them can go above 640×480. The 1280×720 really is for recording video rather then streaming HD. Even if you were able to stream in HD the Flash software that any of the Streaming chat websites can not handle HD and the people viewing probably can not handle it either.

I have spoke about USB mics on my show before . I have a Blue Snowball that I really liked . I grew out of it very fast and had to get a mixer but it was a great mic. Thats the only one I would recommend to anyone

I’m looking for the best camera to do video demos of our iPhone apps and you guys seem to be the only ones with a review of the Microsoft cam. At this point, you’re the only review I can find online, and they’re both great reviews. Thanks so much for posting them!

Now I’ll start walking through your archive to see if you’ve done a review of mics and/or USB mics. I’m thinking about checking out the C01U.
